The U.S. Embassy in Vientiane is seeking an individual for the position of Defense Translator/Administrative Specialist in the Defense Attaché Office (DAO).

BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION
The primary responsibility of the Defense Translator/Administrative Specialist is to provide administrative support and accurate translation between English and Lao, both written and oral, for the Defense Attaché Office (DAO) and for the Executive Office as required. He/she is responsible for factual information on Lao government, diplomacy and on a broad range of media sources. He/she translates Lao government announcements, regulations, official correspondence, and other documents from Lao to English as well as speeches, USG and military documents, and official correspondence from English to Lao as assigned. The incumbent drafts diplomatic notes, requests meetings from Lao government and military offices and assists in arranging travel itineraries for U.S. PACOM, Department of Defense, and other U.S. Government officials visiting Laos. He/she also plans and coordinates visits of Lao government military officials to U.S. sponsored events and training opportunities as required. The incumbent will provide administrative support for routine office operations for the Defense Attaché Office, including processing of incoming and outgoing aircraft and personnel clearances, scheduling appointments, and maintaining an up-to-date directory of Lao government and defense officials. He/she on occasion attends Lao government, international organization, and military defense meetings; arranges protocol and representational events for the Defense Attaché (DATT); and acts as translator during meetings with Lao government and military officials. He/she will maintain up-to-date reporting on Lao government and military developments and provide specialized background reporting on Lao laws.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
NOTE: All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with specific and comprehensive information supporting each item.
1. Education: University degree required.
2. Prior Work Experience: Two to four years of progressive responsibility in a UN, NGO, business, or government office. References required.
3. Language Proficiency: Fluent Lao and English language ability is required – speaking, reading and writing.
4. Knowledge: Working knowledge of Government of Laos and military protocol, correspondence, procedures, organization and customs.
5. S kills and Abilities:
- Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of Government of Laos officials.
- Ability to undertake interpretation and write clearly in both English and Lao.
- Excellent typing skills, use of copiers and other standard office equipment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
- Filing and data management skills are required.
