The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that promotes volunteerism to support peace and development worldwide. Volunteerism can transform the pace and nature of development and it benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer. UNV contributes to peace and development by advocating for volunteerism globally, encouraging partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming, and mobilizing volunteers.

UNV Assignment Title: Interpreter and Translator (2 posts)

Type of assignment: National UNV volunteer

Duty station:
1) Xiengkhuang Province Lao PDR (family station)
2) Khammoune Province Lao PDR (family station)

Duration: initially 6 months with possibility of extension to max 1 year

Host agency: United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)

Project Title: LAO4R21A - Support to Strengthening of the Health System in Lao PDR

Expected starting date: July 2010

Duties and responsibilities:
In the frame of a midwives training programme to reduce maternal mortality, UNFPA requires two experienced and qualified Lao Nationals able to translate official notes, handouts and other materials from Lao into English and to accompany UNV teacher to all official meetings to provide translations, to deal with UNFPA staff, government agencies, school of public health personnel.

Qualifications/Requirements:
Experience: 3-5 (Minimum 3 years) years experience in interpretation or translation of Lao to English and English to Lao
Education: certificate of high school (minimum level)
Competencies: excellent interpersonal communication skills and teamwork ability required
Computer proficiency: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel.
Language skills: fluency in English and Laotian both spoken and written. Knowledge of Thai would be an asset

Conditions of Service:
An initial 6 month contract (renewable for a further 6 months pending mutual agreement and satisfactory reports); monthly volunteer living allowance (VLA) intended to cover housing, basic needs and utilities, settling-in-grant (if applicable); life, health, and permanent disability insurance; return transport to duty station (if applicable); resettlement allowance for satisfactory service.
